In a move that would see years of gradual but hard fought protections for trans and gender non-conforming people in the U.S.—including the basic recognition of gender as an individual’s choice—the Department of Health and Human Services has proposed a legal definition of sex as a biological and unchangeable condition determined at birth, according to The New York Times. The plan has been put forth using Title IX, the federal law that bans gender discrimination in education programs receiving government financial aid, as it’s justification. This new definition would endanger the lives of an estimated 1.4 million Americans who recognize themselves as a gender other than the one they were assigend at birth.

Offering a range of services and programming including education and training for professionals and service providers through curriculum, panels, and seminars; advocacy and lobbying; and community wellness groups focused on ways in which individuals can address their own well-being, New York Trans Advocacy Group (NYTAG) is dedicated to providing culturally sensitive educational trainings to organizations, groups, legislators, and policy makers throughout New York.

Now more than ever, organizations like NYTAG are crucial in the struggle to keep those members of our community who identify as trans or gender non-conforming safe. Because trans rights are human rights, we put our full support behind NYTAG and organizations like it that are dedicated to serving those most at risk.
