The definitive biography of James Yancey, aka J Dilla, landed this week and is currently charting at #4 on the February 20 New York Times Hardcover Nonfiction Best Sellers List! (Also, don’t miss the Hardcover Fiction List, where John Darnielle’s Devil House clocks at #14 for its second week on the List—our first time with a Best Seller in each column!)
Along with its instant best-seller status, Dilla Time is getting some well-deserved love from some of hip-hop’s greats. Questlove, Common, Madlib and more took to Twitter to hype Dan Charnas’s book, which is “a portrait of a complex genius taken too young, as well as a glorious study of the music and culture he created’’ (Spin).
You can check out Dan’s curated playlist of some of Dilla’s essential beats and tracks here. And as the billboard up now in Dilla’s hometown says, “Detroit made Dilla. Dilla remade rhythm.” The story of Dilla’s brilliance is one his fans already know. Now, Dilla Time brings that story to the world.
